Firefighter Workout

It takes more than just water to put out a fire; it takes physical and mental strength as well. The Sacramento City Fire Department has over 400 firefighters who respond to more than 63,000 calls a year. With that many emergencies, these public service individuals have to stay in tiptop shape to battle blazes and handle anything that comes their way. Reporter Jennifer Fischer takes a behind-the-scenes look at what these firefighters do to stay in shape. First she visits the on-call crew at Station House 4 who make it a daily ritual to work out with weights. Then it's off to meet Coach Hughes, the man who runs the interns and fire academy recruits through so many drills, it'll make your head spin!

In 1990, the fire department created a voluntary physical fitness program and yearly physical agility test after many firefighters tested high for cholesterol. Fire officials claim their fitness program is paying off and has ultimately resulted in less injury and sick time.
