Scottish Highland Dance

She puts on her costume and picks up her sword. It's all part of a dance program that features 17-year old Aryn Yancher. The Davis High School senior started working with her instructor, Kyla Groeschel, to learn how to Scottish Highland dance when she was just 5 years old. Since then, Aryn has won several championships and traveled around the world, all while playing water polo and earning great grades.

Highland dancing is the traditional dance form of Scotland, dating back well before tartan, and the kilt. This includes all the flashy moves that involve swords, high-kicking steps, leaping and so on. "It's fun, but it's hard," says Aryn. "It's as good as an aerobic workout and a lot more fun," she adds. The aim of Highland is absolute precision of steps. It is more of an individual sport.
The best Highland dancers from the region will be performing at the Dixon Scottish Games & Gathering, in Dixon of course, on September 28.
