When Joy Schumann retired from her desk job a couple of years ago, she wasn't quite sure what to do next. But then she discovered that she could actually make a living out of a self-confessed bad habit that showed up every time she visited her friends' homes. "… I would sit there until things were presented to me, and I was re-arranging the room in my head. So as a result, I've been doing that." Joy took her bad habit, or skill, to New York, where she trained with an organization called the interior refiners network. Now, as a professional re-designer she helps other people transform, refresh, and re-arrange every room in their house; often without having to spend a penny on new stuff.

Joy charges between $100 and $150 per room, but she says her prices are flexible. She mentions that she appreciates the work done by interior decorators and designers, but it's quite different. Most of them encourage their clients to buy new, while Joy's focus is on re-using what they have. Hence the name, home RE-designer!
