Alex
Vandyke Track Club
Royce
Byran runs the 800 meters in 2 minutes 31 seconds. Arianna Martin
runs it in 2:42. Both could be rising track stars and Olympians,
but they are only just 12 and 10 years old.
But together they help make up the Alex Vandyke
Track Club. An all girls track squad based out of Sacramento.
All the girls range from ages 8 to 18 and can come from all over
the valley. And under the loud whistle of their coach and friend
Coach David Lawrence, these girls are propelling themselves to
new heights.
In
order to be on the squad each girl must maintain a 3.5 GPA in
school because as coach tells them "school comes first."
But that's not a problem for this group because they all love
running and they all love school. And through the support of their
families and coach, they have dreams of competing in this year's
Junior Olympics in Miami Florida. Last year when this squad competed
in the junior games they had one group finish 3rd in the nation
and another finish 6th. Quite an achievement for this bunch and
they have the drive and determination to do even better this year.
The Alex Vandyke Track club is based out of Sacramento
but recruits girls from places like Vallejo, Stockton, and Marysville.
