Sixty Plus Program

"Learning is a never-ending process, and you should always take advantage of the opportunities that are available," notes California State University, Sacramento Astronomy Professor Randy Phelps. This is the viewpoint shared by the 250 unique individuals studying at the university through its "Sixty Plus Waiver Fee Program." For only three dollars a semester, California residents over the age of sixty can take college courses in order to receive a bachelors or masters degree -- or simply to widen their breadth of knowledge and enrich their personal and intellectual lives.

Jennifer Fischer profiles Merick Chaffy, 77, and Leonie Rannie, 75, two CSUS students taking full advantage of this unique opportunity. Chaffy has taken courses through the "Sixty Plus" program for more than eleven years. Although he earned his bachelors degree from UC Berkeley nearly fifty years ago, Chaffy continues to find pleasure and fulfillment in studying everything from art to astronomy at CSUS.

Similarly, Leonie Rannie feels privileged to be spending time in class. Her decision to enter the CSUS Sixty Plus program has proven extremely rewarding. She holds a 3.8 grade point average, recently received a full bright scholarship, and is currently studying for her PhD.
