Russell Schermer, Sculptor

With amazing detail, artist Russell Schermer runs his fingers over the clay to mold it into a perfect miniature representation of a 1998 ML 320 Mercedes.

Born blind, Chico resident Russell Schermer has never seen the cars that he so lovingly moulds out of clay. Instead, Russell has 80 plastic cars that he uses as references or he'll visit car shows and use his hands as his eyes. Memorizing every detail, he reconstructs pieces of clay into an unbelievable likelihood of an object he has never actually seen. His work is even more amazing because he is not a formally trained artist and only took one ceramics class while at Chico State University.

Russell wants to be known as the Michelangelo of car models. He refuses to dwell on his blindness instead wanting to be respected for his work. Slowly Russell's work is getting noticed. Currently his work is for sale at Made In Chico and one of his models is on display at the Minnesota Museum of Science. He also takes requests.
