| The
Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet
If
you were to paint a picture of jazz history some of its greats
would leap off the canvas, legends like Louis Armstrong, Miles
Davis and Dave Brubeck. But in today's music world the true legends
are much harder to come by. Some would say it's because the traditions
of teaching broke down somewhere along the way. In jazz's golden
age the legends of the time played a critical role in forming
the future greats. It can be seen in the way Louis Armstrong passed
his knowledge to Roy Eldridge who later passed it to Dizzy Gillespie.
At
Stockton's University of the Pacific the traditions of old are
coming back to life with the help of former student and jazz legend
Dave Brubeck. The Brubeck Institute was formed at UOP in 2000
with a mission of developing artists and audiences for the future.
To accomplish their mission they've taken a "best of both
worlds" approach to learning, combining the best of what
the university has to offer with the teachings of current jazz
masters.
Recently, five of the most promising jazz students
were chosen from around the country to study at the institute
and form its first quintet. We talked with the group's trumpet
player Anthony Coleman, a Sacramento native who's learning his
role in keeping the art of jazz alive.
