Sutter
Creek Theatre
It's
a big opening night in a small town, and Sutter Creek is abuzz.
It's the premiere performance of 'Annie Get Your Gun.' inside
the newly renovated Sutter Creek Theater, the Director and his
stage crew are tweaking the lights, the sound, and the set.
The actors are squeezing in last minute rehearsals.
Perhaps
most nervous, and proud, is Gary Schmieding, a long time Sacramento
resident who fell in love with Sutter Creek and moved here looking
for a new life, and a new livelihood. Gary discovered that buying
a bed and breakfast would be just too expensive, but then he was
shown the Sutter Creek Theater, built back in 1919. Right away
Gary knew this local landmark, with its art deco design and aging
beauty, would be the place to invest his planning and technical
skills, his heart, soul, sweat and a relative fortune.
The
transformation was total, new lights, plumbing, heating and air,
paint, even integrated sound and TV monitors. Director Corey Rickroad
says the theater now combines the best of the old and the new.
Many of the actors in the foothills have big-city,
even Broadway talent and background, but they choose to keep those
skills in this friendly, hometown venue.
So, it's a great venue for local actors, but it's
also pretty good for Sutter Creek.
The theatre owner says
"It's really a
wonderful feeling, it's the pay back."
"It's the standing here at the back of the theater, watching
people laughing and smiling and enjoying the show, it's watching
the performers do a magical experience onstage, this theater is
magic, it really has a magical feel to it."
