Lighthouse Hostels

"I think people don't realize how much they can save. Here, for instance, you have an ocean on one side and an incredible lighthouse on the other side and you're paying twenty dollars a night!"

Welcome to the world of hostelling. Simple digs often set in spectacular locations… designed for travelers on a budget.

Let's clear up some common misconceptions about hostels. They don't call them youth hostels anymore because people of all ages are welcome. You don't necessarily have to share a room with strangers, although dorm style accommodations are still the cheapest way to go. Best of all, where can you have a room right on the pacific coast for under 20-dollars a night."

Mike explored both lighthouse hostels on California's highway one between San Francisco and Santa Cruz. Point Montara and Pigeon Point were built in the 1870's. After decades of saving ships from ruin along the rugged coast, they retired and became state historic sites. With the help of the coast guard, the state park system and a worldwide group called hostelling international, former Cabins for lighthouse keepers, coast guard members and their families were opened to travelers from around the globe.

Granted, hostelling may not be for everyone. The rooms are small, and bathrooms are shared…even with a private room. You bring your own food, and tidying up the place is encouraged, though not mandatory. They usually close from mid-morning till late afternoon, so you have to clear out and go exploring the nearby beaches and marine preserve.

Recent world events have reduced the number of foreign tourists to the U.S. That's hurt many of these hostels. While it's now easier to get a room, it's still best to call well before your visit, especially for a weekend stay or private room. Just bring a curious mind and a friendly attitude. Even if your travel funds are scarce…you may leave here enriched nonetheless.
