Art
and Artists Sculptor
Russell Shermer
Memorizing every detail of 80 plastic cars by using his hands
as his eyes, artist Russell Shermer of Chico reconstructs pieces of clay into
an unbelievable likelihood of an object he has never actually seen. Born blind,
Russell wants to be known as the Michelangelo of car models while he refuses to
dwell on his blindness.
Singer Peter Yarrow
Peter, Paul and Mary boast a musical legacy known around the
world thanks to timeless recordings such as "Blowin' in the Wind," "If
I Had a Hammer," "Leaving on a Jet Plane," and "Puff, the
Magic Dragon." Now Bette Vasquez sits down with Peter Yarrow to talk about
his 40-year career and the project that brought him to the Central Valley to speak
and sing with educators.
 Poet
Laureate Jose Montoya We chat with Jose Montoya,
who not only is Sacramento's Poet Laureate and a retired university art professor
as well as an active artist, but also one of the most recognized Chicano cultural
activists in our region. Ceja
Family Winery
Continuing a three-generation tradition of growing choice grapes in the Napa and
Sonoma Valleys, the Ceja family oversees the production on more than 100 acres
of prime Carneros region vineyards. From Chardonnay to Pinot Noir this Mexican-American
family's wines are garnering rave reviews in the international wine press. www.cejavineyards.com Writer
Eva Rutland
"Chronicles" meets African-American Novelist Eva Rutland, author of
"No Crystal Stair," a semi-autobiographical story that is the latest
of 23 novels by Rutland. During the course of her long and fruitful career she
has relied upon longhand, an old typewriter, and a tape cassette recorder-anything
to get her thoughts on paper. Today, this totally blind octogenarian writes via
a voice synthesized computer program where she is hard at work on her
24th publication. Glassblower Skip Huckaby
Forged in the white-hot flame of the acetylene torch, Skip Huckaby patiently melts
and molds, stretches and shapes glass into creations that are as useful as they
are unique. Skip is one of only three or four hundred scientific glassblowers
in the world. At UC Davis, Skip works with chemistry and biology students and
professors to design elaborate, one of a kind glass beakers and other
complex apparatus for testing chemicals and compounds to make key discoveries
that may someday save lives.
Actor Edward James
Olmos Actor Edward James Olmos played in numerous film and television
productions, but may be best known for his role as Lt. Martin Castillo in the
80's show "Miami Vice." He received an Academy Award nomination for
best actor for his starring role in "Stand and Deliver." "Chronicles"
meets up with Olmos at Modesto Junior College as he delivers a message to thousands
of area students and educators. Other Stories
We also visit with San Joaquin musicians, a horseshoe artist, and we see an unusual
art exhibit featuring potholders. Season
eight of "Central Valley Chronicles" is underwritten in part by Classic
Living.
