Amanda Blake Museum

Amanda Blake may be best known as the strong and savvy Miss Kitty on "Gunsmoke," but behind the flaming red hair and bright smile she was a true pioneer in more ways than one. She was born Beverly Louise Neill. Like many ingénues of her time, Amanda changed her name in 1948 to Amanda Blake when she started a career in Hollywood. Seven years later she got her big break as "Gunsmoke's" saloon owner Kitty Russell.

Now fans can learn more about the late television personality at the new Amanda Blake Museum and Wildlife Refuge. Jennifer Fischer interviews Pat Derby, founder of PAWS (Performing Animal Welfare Society), and friend of the late starlet. The non-profit group gives shelter and comfort to abused and abandoned wildlife.

After Blake passed away in 1989, she left her entire estate to PAWS, including all of her Hollywood treasures. Outside the quaint log cabin museum at Rancho Seco Park lays the wildlife refuge, which houses dozens of rescued animals roam free on 100 acres. Derby, who is a former animal trainer, helped create the museum and wildlife refuge in honor of Amanda Blake.
