Gladding McBean

Dating back to 1875, the Gladding McBean Terracotta Factory is one the oldest businesses in Placer County. Charles Gladding, Peter McBean and George Chambers who had heard about a large deposit of potter clay in the area constructed it. They came to Lincoln, and in 47 days, constructed a business that has lasted more then 128 years.

What is even more amazing is the fact that over the years Gladding McBean has not changed a thing about the way it makes its architectural terracotta. A lengthy process that takes more than 6 weeks, it is the secret to the companies longevity and fame. Gladding McBean's pieces can been seen all the way from New York, to San Francisco, and even as far away as Japan.

Gladding McBean has survived 3 major fires and almost went out of business in 1976, but was saved when Pacific Coast Building Products bought the business.

The plant covers more then 411 acres and has over 240 employees. It is a focal point in the town of Lincoln. Tours of the plant are available.
