Clock Repair

Most of us have family heirlooms that we cherish. Sometimes it's a precious timepiece -- a grandfather clock that really came from our grandfather, or a wall clock that traveled to California with our ancestors.

Though these objects hold a dear place in our hearts, sometimes time takes its toll. Despite our best efforts to preserve and protect them, clocks break, stop running, and end up in the attic or closet.

Bob Setnik is on a mission to reunite families with their "timeless" treasures. He's a master clock repairman, one of a diminishing breed of experts with the unique skills to fix almost any timepiece. At his shop "In Time Again" in the historic Gold Rush town of Folsom, customers bring their clocks to him from all over the west. Bob says he's yet to encounter a clock that he can't fix.

It's a daunting challenge. Some clocks have been dismantled or gutted -- they come to him literally in cardboard boxes. In many instances, Bob will have to create new parts from scratch. And he spends countless hours correcting other clock repair jobs that were poorly done by other so-called experts.

A typical customer is Rich Boyd, whose father collected antique clocks and passed that same passion on to his son. Rich's father is gone now, so he sees his clocks as a poignant way to remember his dad. Unfortunately, his dad was one of those amateur do-it-yourself repairmen whose fixes sometimes caused more harm than good. Recently, we followed Rich as he brought a broken clock to Bob. At Bob's skilled hands, an amazing accomplishment: a clock that had been silent for 40 years was brought back to life, providing accurate time and filling Rich's house with melodic chimes unheard for decades.
