Sailplane Lessons

Soaring high above the trees and gliding with the wind is the perfect scenario for a bird. Well with the help of sailplanes, also known as glider planes, we can now join our feathered friends and soar peacefully through the sky.

What is a sailplane? A sailplane is simply a plane without engines. They achieve flight with the help of a motored tow plane. The tow plane pulls the glider down the runway in order to achieve flight and then is released thousands of feet in the air leaving the glider to fly and land all on its own.

Pam Turse heads to the Williams Soaring Center and is given a lesson by award-winning chief pilot Kenny Price. Watch through her eyes, as she goes through preflight instructions and is left flying the sailplane, 4000 feet in the air all on her own.

Cameraman Rich EnosKenny will show you how easy and relaxing it is to learn to fly and why everyone is jumping at the chance to take a lesson. The only requirements are that a person must be 14 years of age and ready to have fun.

The Williams Soaring Center is open all year and is the perfect setting to have a lesson. Surrounded by the beautiful Sutter Buttes and the Mendocino range, you'll be able to see Mt. Shasta, Mt. Diablo, and Mt. Lassen from your safe and comfortable position in the cockpit! It's an experience you just have to try.
